Obiettivi formativi

Conoscenza dei principali processi fisici dello strato limite atmosferico, dei processi turbolenti e dispersivi che lo caratterizzano e che determinano l’inquinamento atmosferico. Conoscenza delle caratteristiche dell’inquinamento atmosferico. Conoscenza della modellistica atmosferica.

Knowledge of the main physical phenomena governing the atmospheric boundary layer, of the turbulent and dispersive processes characterizing it and determining the atmospheric pollution. Knowledge of the atmospheric pollutions characteristics. Knowledge of the atmospheric modelling approaches.

PROCESSI ATMOSFERICI

RADIAZIONE: Descrizione dei fenomeni radiativi nell’atmosfera terrestre: Principali leggi della radiazione: di Planck, di Wien, di Stefan-Boltzmann, assorbivita', reflettivita', trasmissivita', radianza ed irradianza - Legge di Beer. Radiazione solare:costante solare, calcolo della posizione del sole, spettro solare, radiazione diretta e diffusa. Radiazione terrestre: spettro di emissione, bilancio radiativo, effetto serra. Radiazione netta

VAPORE: Il vapore nell’atmosfera terrestre. Le leggi fondamentali, l’umidità dell’aria

FLUSSI DI ENERGIA ALLA SUPERFICIE: Descrizione del bilancio energetico alla superficie terrestre. Flussi di calore misurati e parametrizzati in diverse condizioni di suolo (nudo, vegetato, umido, ghiacciato, oceano).

STABILITA' ATMOSFERICA. Descrizione delle diverse condizioni di stratificazione dell’atmosfera, definizione delle diverse classi stabilità che le caratterizzano e introduzione delle grandezze atmosferiche che le definiscono: Lapse rate adiabatico secco e umido; Temperatura potenziale; Frequenza di Brunt-Vaisala; Stabilità statica e dinamica dell'atmosfera secca, umida  e satura; Instabilita' di Kelvin-Helmholtz e Turbolenza in aria chiara; Numero di Richardson. 

TURBOLENZA. Introduzione alla turbolenza atmosferica, ai processi e alle leggi che la determinano, alle grandezze che la descrivono: Flussi laminari e turbolenti; Spettro della turbolenza; Turbolenza meccanica e termica; Stress di Reynolds; Equazioni del flusso turbolento e loro semplificazioni; Energia cinetica turbolenta, sua equazione di bilancio e problema della chiusura; Relazione tra stabilità atmosferica e energia cinetica turbolenta.

STRATO SUPERFICIALE. Descrizione delle caratteristiche dello strato atmosferico alla superficie e introduzione alla teoria della similarità di Monin-Obukhov, dei parametri e delle quantità che lo definiscono: Profilo logaritmico della velocità del vento; Lunghezza di scala di Obukhov; Velocità di attrito, altezza di rugosità; Teoria K di flusso gradiente e lunghezza di mescolamento.

STRATO LIMITE PLANETARIO (PBL): Descrizione dei processi turbolenti e dispersivi che caratterizzano lo strato limite atmosferico; Ciclo giornaliero e definizione dell’altezza di strato limite; Funzioni di similarità nel PBL; Condizioni di stratificazione e stabilità: strato rimescolato, residuo e notturno; dinamica della dispersione di traccianti nello strato limite e nelle diverse condizioni di stabilità atmosferica.

INQUINAMENTO ATMOSFERICO. Definizione di ‘inquinante atmosferico’ e descrizione dei diversi inquinanti atmosferici, gas e aerosol, e delle loro caratteristiche, densità e concentrazione, sorgenti di inquinamento e loro tipologie; processi di emissione, dispersione (trasporto e diffusione), deposizione secca e umida, trasformazione e rimozione in atmosfera degli inquinanti; concetti e metodi per lo studio dell’impatto ambientale e degli effetti sulla salute.

APPROCCIO MODELLISTICO E STRUMENTI DI MISURA

LA MODELLISTICA. Introduzione a modellistica fisica e modellistica numerica. Descrizione dei modelli atmosferici: Equazioni di conservazione; Parametrizzazioni di turbolenza, strato superficiale e strato limite, radiazione, microfisica. Approcci modellistici RANS e LES. Modellistica della dispersione e della qualità dell’aria, dal modello Gaussiano ai modelli Euleriani e Lagrangiani. Sistemi modellistici meteo-dispersivi. Applicazione dei modelli numerici, dalla scala sinottica alla scala urbana: Studio della circolazione e della dispersione; Valutazione dell’impatto ambientale; Previsioni e valutazione della qualità dell’aria. Esempi ed esperienze.

GLI STRUMENTI DI MISURA Principali strumenti di misura delle grandezze meteorologiche. Radiometri, igrometri, termometri, anemometri, polverimentri. Strumenti di tipo tradizionale ed avanzato per misure di turbolenza nello strato limite planetario.

ATMOSPHERIC PROCESSES

RADIATION: Description of the radiative phenomena in the Earth atmosphere: Basic black body radiation laws: Plank, Wien, Stefan-Boltzmann, absorptivity, reflectivity, transmissivity, radiance and irradiance, Beer's law. Solar radiation: Solar constant, calculation of the Sun position, solar spectrum, direct and diffuse radiation. Terrestrial radiation: emission spectrum, radiative budget, greenhouse effect. Radiative flux energy budget.

VAPOR: Vapor in the Earth atmosphere. Basic laws, humidity.

ENERGY BUDGETS AT THE SURFACE: Description of the energy budget at the surface. Measure and parametrization of the energy fluxes at different kinds of surfaces (bare, vegetated, humid, glacier, ocean).

ATMOSPHERIC STABILITY: Description of the different stratification conditions of the atmosphere, definition of the different stability classes and introduction of the atmospheric quantities involved in stratification description: Dry and humid adiabatic lapse rate; Potential temperature; Brunt-Vaisala frequency; Static  and dynamic stability of dry, moist, and saturated atmosphere; Kelvin-Helmholtz instability and clear air turbulence (CAT); Richardson number.

TURBULENCE : Introduction of the atmospheric turbulence: processes, laws and physical quantities: Laminar and turbulent flows; Turbulence spectrum; Mechanic and thermal turbulence; Reynolds stress, Equations of the turbulent flux and their simplifications; Turbulent kinetic energy and its equation budget; turbulence closure problem, relation between atmospheric stability and turbulent kinetic energy.

SURFACE LAYER: Description of the atmospheric layer at the surface and introduction to the Monin-Obukhov similarity theory and its parameters and quantities. Log-wind profile; the Obukhov scale length, friction velocity, roughness lengths, K-theory of the gradient flux and mixing length.

PLANETARY BOUNDARY LAYER (PBL): Description of the turbulent and dispersive processes in the atmospheric boundary layer. Diurnal cycle and definition of the boundary layer height; Similarity functions in PBL, Conditions of stratification and stability, mixed layer, residual and nocturnal, dynamics of tracer dispersion in the boundary layer and in the different conditions of atmospheric stability.

ATMOSPHERIC POLLUTION: Definition of ‘atmospheric pollutant’, description of the different pollutants in atmosphere, gas and aerosol, density and concentration, sources. Emission processes, dispersion (transport and diffusion), humid and dry deposition, transformation and removal in atmosphere, concepts and methods for the environmental impact and effects on health.

MODELS AND INSTRUMENTS

MODELS: Introduction to physical modeling and numerical modeling. Description of atmospheric models: Conservation equations; Turbulence parametrizations, surface and boundary layer, radiation, microphysics. RANS and LES modeling approaches. Air dispersion and quality modeling, from the Gaussian model to the Eulerian and Lagrangian models. Weather-dispersive modeling systems. Application of numerical models, from the synoptic to the urban scale: Study of circulation and dispersion; Environmental impact assessment; Forecast and evaluation of air quality. Examples and experiences.

MEASUREMENT INSTRUMENTS Main instruments for measuring meteorological quantities. Radiometers, hygrometers, thermometers, anemometers, dust testers. Traditional and advanced instruments for turbulence measurements in the planetary boundary layer
