The course aims to provide a thorough introduction to the fundamentals ideas, methods and results of non-relativistic Quantum Mechanics. All lectures will be in english.

The student will understand the basic principles of non-relativistic Quantum Mechanics and develop the ability to use the standard computational tool. The will also learn a selection of the fundamental results of NRQM.

Programma

The crisi of Classical Physics at the end of the 19th century. Particle and wave behaviour of matter and radiation. Wavefunction and the Schrödinger equation. Plane waves and wave packets. Coordinate and momentum spaces. Physical observables and quantum operators: commutation relations, eigenvalue equations. Measurements in QM, complete sets of commuting observables. The momentum operator. The augular momentum operators. Quantum states, stationary states and time evolution. One dimensional examples. Simple linear harmonic oscillator. Central problems. Hydrogenic atoms:eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the hamiltonian. The matrix formalism of QM. The Dirac formalism. Heisenberg operators and states. The simple linear harmonic oscillator and the angular momentum operators in the matrix approach. Spin and composition of angular momenta. Time-independent perturbation theory: Stark and Zeeman effects. Time-dependent perturbation theory. Variational methods. Identical particles: bosons and fermions. Atomic transitions and selection rules.
