Before these topics, "summary" lectures are given on basic topics of quantum mechanics and statistics which are essential for the understanding of the topics of the course. The program for the academic year 2014/15 is available on the website:

The exam is organized as follows:
- evaluation of the the experimental activities carried out in the laboratory, aimed to verify the ability of the student to properly use experimental protocols and the laboratory instrumentation and to perform a suitable data analysis. The exam is organized as follows:
- evalutation of the reports: The laboratory groups will have to present their group-based laboratory reports to the teacher within 7 days from the conclusion of the laboratory sessions. The reports will be evaluated by the teacher.
- oral exam: only students with a sufficient evaluation of their laboratory reports will be admitted to this exam. The exam will be focused on i) the physics, the instrumentation and the results obtained from the analysis of acquired data, relatively to the laboratory experience performed by the student; ii) the subjects presented in the general and introductory lectures.
- a written exam regarding numerical exercises of atomic physics and solid state physics, aimed to verify the ability of the student to properly apply the fundamental physical models for the physical phenomena at the atomic scale, to master the order of magnitude of the physical observables and to solve problems relevant to material properties. The exam will consiste in numerical exercise of atomic physics, quantum statistics and solid state physics; the duration of the exam is 2 hours. Students will not be allowed to carry books or notes; synthetic notes (with fundamental constants, periodic table of elements, several fundamental formulas) will be available to support the students in the exam. The written exam taken in a session is only valid for that session. If two exams are scheduled in a session, a student that took both exams can undertake the oral exam after choosing the highest of the two marks.
- an oral exam relevant to topics trated during the course lectures, aimed to verify the knowledge of the fundamental physical models relevant to the atom and molecular physics, statistical physics and solid state physics.Only students with a sufficient (i.e. 18/30) mark from the written exam will be admitted to the oral exam. The exam will be focused on the discussion of the written exam and on topics trated during the course lectures.
The final mark will result from the average of the marks obtained in the 3 above-mentioned exams (evaluation of the laboratory activities, written exam, oral exam).
