Obiettivi formativi

The course is intended for students of all disciplines, including non-scientific ones. It is intended to face the issue of the climate emergency starting from the methodological bases and from a set of elementary notions of climate physics and climate change. The course will begin by underlining the essential themes of orders of magnitude, uncertainties and errors, and graphical representations of data. The final goal is to teach students: the basic notions on the processes that regulate the earth's climate, as a result of the interaction between the main subsystems that make up the earth-atmosphere-ocean system; basic knowledge on numerical models and on the interpretation of the outputs of climate models; how to correctly interpret the texts and graphics of climate reports; basic notions of statistics; concepts of adaptation and mitigation.

  1. Debunking di una fake news sul tema del cambiamento climatico;

The learning assessment procedures foresee the evaluation of an essay in which one (or more) topics discussed during the lessons are addressed. In essence, this means choosing between two models:

  1. Debunking of a fake news on the theme of climate change;
  2. Construction of a popular essay on one of the topics covered.

The maximum number of pages is comprised between 5 and 8, with Times new Roman font, size 12, standard margins, single line spacing. The sources will be strictly cited, e.g. in parentheses with the surname of the author or authors and year, within the text, not with a footnote, and then reporting the complete bibliography at the bottom. Example of citation of an author (Tizio, 2020, page 170), of two authors (Tizio and Caio, 2019, page 17) and of three authors (Tizio et al., 2015, page 23).

Note

IMPORTANT: Attendance in presence in classroom is allowed only to students enrolled in UniTo, or Erasmus UniTo. This restriction is exclusively due to issues related to security for access to UniTo. Therefore, in order to access, it is not sufficient to have the Green Pass, but it is necessary to be an UniTo student enrolled.

ALSO, it is NECESSARY to book the classroom by 11:59 p.m. of the day before the lecture using the "Student Booking" application (link for students: here), in order not to exceed the maximum capacity of the classroom.

WE RECOMMEND TO STUDENTS WOULD SUBSCRBE TO THE MOODLE SITE (see the link in the icone below).

This course has been designed for students NOT belonging to the Department of physics who want to deepen their knowledge on issues relating to climate and climate change, in order to be able to account for the seriousness of the climate-environmental problem and the need for measures to reduce the effects of change. For the students of the Department of Physics, there is the course Physics of Climate (from 2023: introduction to the climate system), more detailed, on the same topic.
