Risultati dell'apprendimento attesi

Knowledge and understanding

The course proposes an experimental verification of physics arguments already introduced in other classes, with the goal of enhancing the comprehension of the basic principles of the Classical Physics (mechanics, thermodynamics, fluids, waves).

The students should learn the basic working principles of the instruments typically employed in physics measurements in the Laboratories, as well as the basic statistical methods used to process experimental data.

Both the activities of performing the analysis of experimental data and of writing a report improve informatics and computational skills.

Applying knowledge and understanding

The laboratory activity requires the capability of performing measurements and of interpreting the experimental results by means of a correct statistical analysis.

Especially the laboratory activity helps to learn how to deal with problems presented in a new situation and to understand the essential aspects of unknown problems. It helps moreover in designing experimental studies and performing data processing. By proposing an experimental verification of physics knowledges already acquired, the course allows the students to understand more deeply the scientific methodology. Both the activities of performing the analysis of experimental data and of writing a report improve informatics and computational skills.

The students develop also the expertise in organizing the employment of their own time and the group activities, by distributing properly the responsibilities among the group members.

The production of a written report on the performed work, develops the capability of elaborating and defining conclusions in a clear and accurate way, both in written and oral ways.

The laboratory activity, being performed in collaboration with other students and asking to deal with always varying experimental problems, helps to develop a flexible mentality and problem-solving skills. This situation is a good training in view of a future work.

  • 30 ore di lezioni frontali in aula;
  • 2 ore di esercitazioni pratiche durante le quali ciascuno studente esegue individualmente una prima esperienza in remoto;

https://unito.webex.com/meet/davide.gandolfi

Teaching is based on face to face lessons in the classroom and experiments in the laboratory, whose presence is mandatory. Lectures will be also streamed live using Webex at the following link:

https://unito.webex.com/meet/davide.gandolfi

Teaching performed in the classroom introduces the main methods of data reduction and analysis, to be applied in the analysis of data acquired during the laboratory experiments. During the classes, a short description of the physics behind the experiments will be reviewed as well.

Data analysis is performed, at least at the beginning, in the laboratory, under the supervision of the teacher and tutors. A first guided analysis of the data acquired during the first experiment is conducted in the computer room

Teaching methods include:

  • classes on line through Webex tele-conference system and subsequent sharing of the material successiva;
  • recorded classes;
  • material such as slides, simulations and python notebooks published on moodle platform;
  • direct contact with students by means of emails for specific questions and moodle forum for more general questions

The level of knowledge of the concepts and tools acquired during the course is evaluated continuously during the entire teaching period. Different methods are used: a) written tests on specific topics; b) reports related to the data reduction and analysis of experiments performed in the laboratory. The first reports, whose objective is to apply in a simplified way the analysis tools described during the lessons, are checked and returned with feedbacks. The first report of the last didactic period should approach the level of the final report, which is evaluated as part of the final vote.

The final level of knowledge is evaluated on the basis of: the report on one experiment performed in the laboratory, the oral discussion of its content, the oral verification of the knowledge of the physics behind the experiments and of the theoretical aspects of data analysis and reduction described during the different classes.

EXAM: It is an oral exam and requires the capability to present and discuss the analysis methods of experimental data, starting from the defence of the report on a laboratory experiment. The knowledge of the physics related to the experiments is required as well.

REMOTE EXAMINATION through Webex system. Possible technical malfunctioning of the connection (i.e. unstable or absent connection for Webex) will not preclude the possibility to take the exam, which will be done through other platforms or with a different timetable compared to what has been scheduled.

The online exams are guaranteed to the students that will be in one of the following conditions:
1) fragile situation (direct or indirect, sickness, etc.);
2) residence or domicile outside the region;
3) absence from the regional territory with justified reasons.
