Temi di ricerca
Studio dei cambiamenti in corso, e attesi per il futuro, nel clima e nel ciclo idrologico, soprattutto per quanto riguarda le regioni montane di alta quota. Studio delle climatologie e dei trend a lungo termine di variabili come la precipitazione e la temperatura, e variazioni dei trend con la quota.
Studio di un meccanismo noto come “Elevation-Dependent Warming”, ovvero se e come il riscaldamento, e i suoi effetti, dipendano dalla quota nelle regioni di montagna e in particolare siano amplificati con la quota.
Per quanto riguarda gli strumenti utilizzati nel lavoro, l’approccio seguito è trasversale e comprende l’analisi di dati derivanti da osservazioni (sia in-situ sia satellitari e dalla loro integrazione) e da modelli climatici globali e regionali. Ciò implica l’utilizzo di metriche e diagnostiche per confrontare dati osservati e simulati, estrarre la massima informazione da essi, tenendo conto delle incertezze in gioco, e validare e valutare (con un approccio contemporaneamente orientato alla comprensione dei processi) i modelli climatici. Utilizzo di tecniche di downscaling stocastico della precipitazione mediante la tecnica RainFARM sviluppata e migliorata nel tempo presso ISAC-CNR, da applicare ai dati a bassa risoluzione spaziale come quelli forniti dai modelli climatici globali o regionali allo stato dell’arte, o delle osservazioni grigliate. Il downscaling fa parte della catena modellistica che è stata utilizzata per meglio rappresentare gli estremi di precipitazione e nello studio degli impatti del cambiamento climatico su scala locale, ad esempio per applicazioni idrologiche, lo studio di frane e del rischio idrogeologico, o per studiare cambiamenti in atto in specifici ecosistemi, o anche per quantificare l’impatto del cambiamento climatico e in particolare degli estremi climatici sul patrimonio culturale.
